Between soft and contemplative piano melodies, breakbeats, and characteristically processed vocals, “Breathewithyou” is a hypermodern elegy combining sparse and disparate elements into something novel and profound. If you prefer a more upbeat, danceable, or #nightcore version, the second half of this single “Breathwithyou – EXE Mix” also has you covered. This release is the second single from Amador Diaz’s forthcoming album Air Dash, which will be released later in 2023.
Contextually, Diaz’s solo material bears some similarities to independent electronic pop music or hyperpop. They once half-jokingly referred to their music as “Gen Z Linkin Park” in conversation with me. It’s also material that seems to draw on wide-ranging influences such as video games, anime, and internet culture. I suppose it’s also worth noting that Diaz was formerly the bandleader of indie rock band Captain Samurai, an act which propelled sweet melodies over gnarled major key guitars and aggressive pumping percussion.
Their solo work retains some similar elements, including reflective lyrics and melodies with a guitar making an appearance here or there. However, it’s also markedly more electronic in its production, with pounding punk-adjacent live drums being swapped out for present and pumping electronic percussion and breakbeats.
Amador Diaz’s first album Angel Eternal debuted in 2021. You can listen to this existing album and a few other singles in anticipation of the new record, Air Dash, later this year.
